Maaten Janssen (born in 1960 in Rijswijk, Netherlands) studied at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten Rotterdam. He lives and works in Rotterdam and Berlin.

The autonomy of the image is the recurring proposition in the analytical works of Janssen. By objectifying processes of decision-making, Janssen seeks to enable the work to describe itself as resulting from intrinsic causes.

One Euro

Using his studios as a point of departure, Janssen designed a tour around Berlin’s city-center with the intention to spend exactly one Euro in eight different copy shops. At the first copy shop, he Xeroxed the Euro coin, then in the remaining seven making photocopies of the continuously diminishing change he was left with.
